Taking Too Long to Find Locums Work? Here’s What to do.

Making the decision to start doing locums work is very exciting and scary at the same time. It is time of transition that can be filled with uncertainty and doubt, especially when it is taking more time to find locums work than you initially thought. However, if you do these three things, you will find yourself with a locums assignment in no time flat!

  1. Broaden your search. In order to find more locums assignments, you must consider locums assignments that you may not have initially considered. Consider taking locums assignments in another specialty than you initially considered. For example, I am a critical care physician. However, when I needed to a locums assignment in a short amount of time, I took an assignment as a hospitalist because there are more hospitalists locums assignments than critical care locums assignments. Also, consider broadening your search in terms of geographic location. You must go where the jobs are. You will have better luck finding locums assignments in underserved areas than you will in highly desirable locations.
  2. Communicate with locums recruiters on a regular basis. Locums recruiters really know the locums market. In order to find assignments, you must have a good working relationship with several recruiters. They will be able to suggest some assignments you may not have considered and will call you when new assignments occur. Be sure to touch base with them on a regular basis.
  3. Keep the faith. It is easy to become discouraged when you search for assignments isn’t going as planned. However, remember that things change rapidly in the field of medicine. New opportunities arise daily. Your next locums assignment is one phone call, text, or email away. Therefore, keep your spirits up and know that everything is going to work out!o
