Working as a locums physician has its benefits: freedom, flexibility, control, and increased pay, to name a few. While locums has its advantages, it is not without its challenges. In order to overcome the some of the challenges you may face with being a locums physician, it is imperative that you develop a locums mindset.
- Remember why you are there. My favorite locums recruiter always says as it pertains to the clients, “they use locums for a reason.” In other words, if they had everything together, they would not need your services. Therefore, adjust your expectations and know that things may not run smoothly.
- Don’t take it personally. Medicine is a business and locums is no different. The decision to use locums is a serious decision that requires an investment of a lot of time and money on the part of the facility. Therefore, their decision as it pertains to you and your service as a locums physician is a business decision. Treat it as such and move on.
- You are there to change your world, not to change theirs. Remember your reason for doing locums. Whether it is to have more time, more freedom, to make extra money, or to start your own business, you are doing locums because you want to improve your world. You are not there to change their world. Your job is to see the patients and provide the standard of care. Nothing more, nothing less.
If you follow these three simple steps, you can develop a locums mindset that will ensure that you will have success and longevity as a locums physician.
