3 Reasons Why Every Locums Doctor Needs A Locums Coach

When I decided to become a locums doctor over 10 years ago, I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into. I had just lost my first “real job” as an attending and had decided to go back to school to get my MBA. Locums seemed like the perfect opportunity to work and to still have the freedom and flexibility to pursue my other goals. However, I made several (costly)mistakes along the way. See, when I started locums, I knew no one else who was doing it. Therefore, I felt isolated, alone, and even embarrassed at times. Without having the guidance of a mentor or even a friend, I was forced to navigate the locums world alone. And although, ten years later, I consider myself a locums success, I look back and think “had I known then what I know now” …… And therefore, every locums doctor, especially the ones who are early in their locums career, needs a locums coach.

A locums coach will help you:

  1. Get Your Mind Right. As I like to say, “mindset is key”. To be successful as a locums physician, you must have the right mindset. You are going to have to make the transition from being a “permanent” doctor to be a locums doctor. There are also some other barriers you must overcome to be successful, and your locums coach can help you do just that.

  1. Get Your Money Right. There is a saying that goes: “You don’t get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate.” No place is this more important than in doing locums. I have seen the pay rate for the same job vary by as much as $50/hour. Your locums coach can tell you how much you should be getting paid and can give you negotiation strategies to ensure you get paid what you are worth.

  1. Get Your Method Right. Working as a locums doctor can be a complicated process because many things must happen for you to start working as a locums doctor. From working with recruiters, to finding the right assignment, to getting licensed and credentialed, to working the actual assignment, to scheduling subsequent assignments…. locums is a process. A locums coach can guide you through this process and help you develop your own method for addressing each of these issues.

As you can see, there are several benefits to having a locums coach. Having someone guide you throughout the process can save you time and earn you money.
