Three Reasons Why You Should Start Doing Locums Right Now

There have been a lot of stories on the news recently about physicians losing their jobs. Their companies have lost their contracts or have been bought out by other organizations. Many of these physicians have been taken off guard and are wondering what their step is going to be. If you are in that position, a position of just having lost your job for whatever reason. I have some advice for you. Start doing locums! Here are three good reasons why you should start doing locums now.

  1. Locums work and other prn work allow you to do what you need to do until you can do what you want to do. What I mean is that if you have just lost your job, you need a job ASAP. Doing locums work allows you to get a job relatively quickly and thus buys you time until you can figure out your next move.
  2. Temporary jobs pay permanent bills. Your mortgage does not pay itself. Your student loans don’t pay themselves. Your creditors don’t care where the money comes from. They don’t care whether you pay them from your salary as an employed physician or whether you pay them from money you make from moonlighting. All they care about is that you pay them on time.
  3. Locums work keeps you from making a permanent decision based on temporary circumstances. Your job loss is a temporary condition. You will find another permanent position if that’s what you want to do. The physician shortage is real, and physicians continue to be in demand. You just must decide what your next step is going to be. When you are going through the trauma of having lost a job unexpectedly, you may not know what your next step is going to be. Doing locums work buys you time. You can take a temporary locums position, that pays well, and which will allow you to take some time and decide what you want to do.
